Kathy Weaver:
The subject matter for my artwork is the interrelationship
of art and science and, specifically, of robots and humans.
Using low-tech materials of needle and thread and airbrush,
I delve into questions of technological progress and militarism.
Though the robot is perceived as dehumanized, my revised version
of this 21st century sentient being symbolizes a more enlightened
civilization.
My embroideries evoke an alternative world where mechanistic
imagery and plant life intersect. These painted and stitched
forms are reminders of the primordial soup from which we evolved
and are derived from my readings in the field of artificial
life. The embroideries show a duality between the softness
and familiarity of satins and threads and the complexity of
forms from organic chemistry, cellular biology and engineered
robots.
The Dolch List Robots are a humorous series of intimate
scaled embroideries depicting a selection of the 100 most
used words in the English language, the Dolch List. These
are sight words, often memorized by form rather than phonetically.
Learning these words is crucial to decoding written language.
Kathy Weaver will showing work and giving a lecture at SOFA
Chicago.
